Lets get together and MEND OUR CLOTHES! Did you know that Mending your clothing instead of buying new clothing reduces the carbon footprint of the mended item by up to 24%!?*
In this 5 week course I will teach you Creative and Traditional techniques to prolong the life of your clothes.
Get to that pile of mending done, so you can continue to wear your fave pieces with pride! Stitch Witch Studio is a lovely environment to drop in and focus on your sewing. During this time you will be able to get expert advice on the best way to mend your beloved clothing, while having access to a dedicated and well appointed sewing space.
By engaging in the mending process of your own clothing, you have the opportunity to personalise and get creative. Mend a hole with bright pink thread. Sew on a patch of colourful fabric. Change up those buttons to show your own style.
You will need to go through your wardrobe and find all your broken, torn and well loved clothes to bring in to the studio for this Course. At the start of each session we will cover the techniques to learn the skill for that class and then look through the items that everyone has brought along and discuss specific techniques you can use to repair that item in the best way. You will learn what’s possible and get inspired from each others projects.
To do this course you will need to know the very basics of how to use a sewing machine. If you are not sure how to use a sewing machine, I recommend taking our Beginners Sewing and Beginners Overlocking courses before enrolling in this course. This course is appropriate for those who have just learned the basics and those with plenty of skills who just need the space and time.
We will cover:
- Discreet Patching techniques.
- Creative Patching techniques & “Boro:”
- Darning.
- How to replace a broken zipper.
- Replacing or reenforcing a panel of worn out fabric.
- Replacing elastic.
- Mending fallen and frayed hems.
You will need to bring your own basic sewing kit, along with your own clothes to mend. There is a variety of machines available for use in the studio so you can just rock up and get sewing. Those who have their own sewing machines and wish to bring them are also welcome to do so. The basic sewing kit should include: Fabric cutting scissors, a quick unpick, sewing thread, bobbins, Domestic Sewing machine needles, hand sewing needles, pins, pin cushion. You can order a basic sewing kit through us to be ready for you on your first day of class.
